Tema 79'Organized by Mediterranean Conference Centre
What a year 1979 was!
The first British nudist beach was established in Brighton and Margaret Thatcher was elected Prime Minister. China instituted the one child per family rule, the world’s first anthrax epidemic began in Russia and Jupiter’s rings were photographed. If that were not enough, the Sahara Desert experienced snow for thirty minutes.
Locally, 1979 was equally significant, witnessing the withdrawal of British troops and the Royal Navy from our islands. For the first time in a millennium, Malta was no longer a military base of a foreign power and it became truly independent.
Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I Will Survive’ was extremely popular that year, which is very apt, considering the resilient nature of the Maltese in their journey towards independence. Coincidentally,1979 was musically exceptional. Michael Jackson released his breakthrough album "Off the Wall" and Pink Floyd came up with the multi award winning concept album "The Wall", with the top selling single "Another Brick in the Wall". Not to mention the Bee Gees, Dire Straits, Rod Stewart, Blondie’s ‘Heart of Glass’, Donna Summer, The Eagles, The Police and Village People.
A perfect occasion to celebrate local happenings within a musical context is TEMA 79, a concert featuring all genres of music pertaining to 1979. A 40-piece orchestral band will join forces with the top names in Malta’s musical scene and bring beautiful live music that will commemorate, reminisce and provide optimal entertainment.
A night not to be missed!
